PERSONALITY
Reserved, compassionate, easily annoyed if you're Gojou and also kind of easily annoyed if being asked questions about himself that aren't about work. But seriously...Megumi is a serious sort of person. He has a tendency to put other people before him, which it has been pointed out to him is what's holding him back from fully realizing his own potential. There is a strong sense of injustice about the world to him that applies both to good people and bad people for different reasons. While his intent becoming a jujutsu sorcerer/shaman was to cement a livelihood for himself and Tsumiki, it's clear he's come into his own morals of what that means for him in this line of work -- which is that he will choose who he saves and always try to save a good person if he can (i.e. Yuuji) because he can't stand seeing good people suffer.
Closemouthed about himself, he doesn't reveal things even to his friends, which Nobara mentions. It would be inaccurate to say Megumi doesn't reflect because he thinks a great deal and a lot of the time; he just doesn't share. When he was a kid (first grade) he spoke very frankly during his meeting with Gojou both about the selling of himself to the Zen'in Clan and the possibility of being bought back if the pay was that he and Tsumiki would be looked after financially and Tsumiki could, potentially, be happy. Shows from a very young age, Megumi doesn't have much care about himself, which feeds into his tendency to try to work with/support others often at the cost of himself. He has a soft spot for good people despite what he says, evidenced by his actions regarding Yuuji. Gojou is someone he is annoyed by but is also grateful to and says at one point that "I still owe him a lot..."
Gentle, reassuring to his shikigami ("Don't be afraid,"), Megumi is fond of his shikigami and though they don't go into it, feels the loss of them. Though their energy is recycled into him again, it is of course, still a death, and he tries not to let it happen though given their work and the level, it's inevitable. Am extrapolating from this to say he'd probably be decent with animals.
This is not a personality thing per se but nowhere else to put it so: likes reading nonfiction, black coffee, but also sweets -- maybe Gojou's influence???, presumably music??? given his headphones. Maybe has a sensitive stomach though, as when the gang is eating pizza he comments that he'd like something easier to digest?! Anyway. Despite his reserve, he'll say earnest things like "I have no regrets about saving you" and "it smells like sunshine" -- 'mr. sun' sort of childlike holdover terms without even really thinking about it?! and so on. It doesn't come across in English because...ENGLISH....but his way of speaking is sort of cute in general which is kinda funny when you consider how Serious he is.... On that note, Megumi has a cute/sweet side sort of. Kind of. If you squint. And it's just the right situation. Apparently that's either someone looks like they're dying or weird questions about the smell of not-pandas. But never mind. Anyway. Again, kind, stubborn yet not unwilling to compromise, fast thinker in terms of battle tactics, annoyed on the daily but kind of used to the feeling bc Gojou, and all in all a pretty perceptive guy when it comes to most things even if he's not about to share with the class.
APPEARANCE
Black hair, green eyes, 5'9, his hairstyle is described by Akutami as 'erratic' by which we can more or less surmise as Does Nothing To It, lithe, and if he's not in his version of the school uniform he's in some other probably black and loose fitted clothing as he prefers to wear things that would be comfortable to also wear at home. The same way that appearance doesn't mean a lot to Megumi in terms of other people, it's reasonable to say that this applies to himself as well - not neglectful but not doing anything extra, ever.
ABILITIES
CURSED ENERGY
There are several theories as to where specifically in the body cursed energy comes from. Gojo initially posits that cursed energy is thought to come from the mind or the heart. It is most commonly theorized, however, that as negative emotions are thought to come from people's stomachs, cursed energy also originates from this point. Todo provides a third alternative theory, arguing that negative emotions such as anger can come from the head and people exist in the world with their entire bodies and souls, implying that cursed energy is created from a person's entire being.
Civilians cannot control the flow of cursed energy in their bodies. As a result, they continuously leak cursed energy, which creates curses. Sorcerers control the flow of cursed energy in their bodies and collect this energy, allowing them to use it at will and also to greatly reduce its leakage out from their bodies. This involves controlling their emotions. For example, if a sorcerer lets their anger overflow, then they will use up their stored cursed energy very quickly.
Cursed energy on its own is not user friendly. Similar to electricity, it is volatile, sporadic, and dangerous when not contained or controlled in some way, shape, or form. It can be used as blunt force attacks when not manipulated. Where a significant amount of cursed energy gathers, a cursed object such as a talisman may be born in that place.
Cursed energy appears to be unique to the user, or at least, a user can be identified from its cursed energy if the cursed energy is registered. There is also presumably a registry of cursed energy. As Maki Zen'in cannot use cursed energy, she cannot be identified from it. It is implied there is an identifiable difference between the cursed energy present in sorcerers, civilians, and the cursed energy that makes up curses.
Cursed energy appears to impact how individuals are physically perceived by others, as Toji Fushiguro, the only known person in the Jujutsu Kaisen universe to not collect or output cursed energy, is considered virtually invisible to many people.
Sorcerers manipulate the flow of cursed energy within their bodies. They can manipulate cursed energy to form cursed techniques. Curses also have the ability to manipulate cursed energy.
Raw cursed energy appears to be able to be manipulated to harden or strengthen a sorcerer's body or to protect a sorcerer's soul. Cursed Energy can also be outputted as raw force to destroy a target. It can be thrown at a target or can be used to enhance a person's physical attacks (i.e punch, kick).
Sorcerers of average or above skill can see the residue of cursed energy or at least the residue of cursed energy in addition to seeing curses. Similarly, sorcerers can hide these residual traces to prevent them being followed or tracked. They can also read the flow of cursed energy in another person's body.
Some High Grade sorcerers can sense what Aoi Todo calls the "taste" of cursed energy, allowing them better understanding of their own and other's cursed energy and cursed techniques. On the verge of death, a sorcerer may be able to understand the core of cursed energy
HISTORY
BORN
Born to Zen'in Toji and Fushiguro [name redacted] December 22, 2002. Was given the name Megumi by his father, and inherited the name Fushiguro from his mother (which his father also took at that time, demonstrating his complete disconnect from the Zen'in Clan.)ENDINGS & BEGINNINGS
When Megumi is in first grade/just before, Toji gets together with Tsumiki's mom and they separate almost immediately, according to translation clarifications it's never actually called marriage so...anyways. Both seemingly abandon their children - Toji first, then Tsumiki's mother (Megumi's biological mom already dead at this point) Gojou Satoru shows up and offers Megumi a deal: he'll handle the matter of Megumi being sold to the Zen'in Clan (probably paid them off if we're being real here which means uh a Lot Of Money tho this isn't canon this is headcanon lol idk maybe bc it's THE Gojou Satoru they were like uGH FUCK OFF FINE? who knows....) if Megumi agrees to train to become a jujutsu sorcerer going forward/ in the future. Megumi asks if Tsumiki will be happy with the Zen'in Clan and Gojou tells him no. Megumi agrees to the deal. Worth noting that news of his being sold was not in fact news; Megumi had deduced as much. Gojou though about to tell him about his father (killed by Gojou), does not because Megumi tells him he doesn't care, he doesn't even remember his face. All that matters to him at that point is Tsumiki's happiness. Gojou asks him, "Are you really a first grader?"IN BETWEEN
Based on what Gojou says and what Megumi does not refute, he had already manifested his curse technique by then (makes sense since typical ages are 4-6 and Toji had promised to sell him off by then if it manifested.) Ten Shadows begins when a sorcerer receives two divine dogs. The sorcerer and divine dogs must work together to exorcise other shikigami in order to use them. We haven't seen any flashbacks about this but Megumi explains it during the Shibuya Incident. He has at least, therefore, manifested the divine dogs by the time Gojou finds him, and aside from Gojou and Tsumiki, those dogs are his oldest friends. It does not seem that growing up Megumi was forced to do regimented training, but based on his skill level when regular canon begins, it feels probable that he was doing some kind of training, also evidenced by his ability to literally beat whole gangs up in junior high. To Megumi whose primary concern was Tsumiki's well being, it's hard to say if these were difficult years or just years that passed with the blessing of nothing too bad happening or a combination. Megumi is stoic about his feelings though less than he thinks, and his morals give him away regardless, but during this time, it's arguable his life was its most stable, and that's something he might not recognize at the time but probably did later.TSUMIKI
Tsumiki is cursed and falls into a coma. It's not entirely clear but it feels like Megumi moves into the technical school early, perhaps right after this. His room though barren of personal things, has a dish rack, everything that is there very neatly organized; it has a sense of someone who's been there for a while despite being bare bones. For now I'm going with that guess and will adjust if I find out concretely otherwise. This was during Megumi's third year of junior high at Saitama Urami East Junior High where he got into a lot of fights, beating up bullies, scorning both the mean and the goody goodies with equal dislike, frustrated by the hierarchies of injustice inherent in abusing the weak as well as forgiving the terrible. During the time following Tsumiki's incident, Megumi presumably was either only with Gojou, alone, or vaguely on the periphery of the first years (second years in regular canon) such as Inumaki, Maki, Panda, and Okkotsu. Megumi has a tendency to be both a lone wolf but also default to support when within a group dynamic as far as fighting. Socially he doesn't seem interested, and it feels likely after Tsumiki that he threw himself into his training, which would have come almost exclusively if not entirely so from Gojou who, later in canon, recognizes that Megumi has the potential to be stronger than Yuuji but he'll never be that if he can't figure out how to "die victorious" versus "win after dying". Anyway, suffice to say the time after Tsumiki and up to when he meets Yuuji, is probably mostly training, missions, etc.INTRODUCTION ARC: ITADORI YUUJI
"By Jujutsu regulations, Itadori Yuuji should still be executed. But I do not want him to die. Please do something."CURSED WOMB ARC: SUKUNA
After losing Divine Dog White, Megumi is able to find and escape with Kugisaki. He ends up having to fight Sukuna in Yuuji's body, losing, and ready to use what Gojou later refers to as "the ace up your sleeve" but then doesn't have to because Yuuji takes over again and 'dies'. Before this however, Sukuna notes the rarity of Megumi's Technique and, calls it a 'waste of talent' that Megumi ran from the Special Grade Curse earlier. When Megumi seems to manifest his cursed energy in a different way, Sukuna hones in on it and tells him, depending on the translation, for him to 'entertain' him or 'make him fall'. Okay Sukuna. In addition to Divine Dog White, Megumi loses Orochi as well, releasing Nue in time to keep him safe before his last face-off with Sukuna (for now.)CURSED TRAINING
Several things happen in this segment but most notably the training with Cursed Weapons from Maki, as well as the understanding/beginning of understanding that he can use his shadows in more ways than he has so far. (When he considers this potentiality he thinks of Sukuna's words: a waste.) This is also spurred on by his wondering how to carry/have Cursed Weapons while also not sacrificing the freedom of his hands which are essential to his technique.KYOTO GOODWILL EVENT ARC
During their impromptu brawl, Toudou mentions that he feels almost 0 will to fight from Megumi who replies that Toudou sure is prideful for someone who's fighting a person who's just trying to hold back. Much like with Sukuna, Toudou seems to sense in Megumi something Particular when Megumi is about to get serious, but Inumaki intervenes and the fight ends.
Firstly, this is when Megumi and Nobara find out Yuuji isn't dead. Secondly, Megumi notices something is off with Yuuji (the whole thing with Mahito and Junpei had happened even though they were not there.) Thirdly, he notes that the opposing team might be trying to kill Yuuji so they head back on that hypothesis. He has the fight with Noritoshi that's interrupted by Hanami and Inumaki showing up (Inumaki tells them to run of course.) Megumi appears to lose Nue here. In the fight with Hanami, Hanami plants a cursed seed in Megumi that feeds on cursed energy but luckily he's pretty much almost out at the time. Toudou and Yuuji show up and Maki and Megumi are taken away by Panda.THE DEATH PAINTING ARC
Akari takes Megumi, Nobara, and Yuuji to a mission only to find the person they were going to see is dead. They decide to investigate Saitama Urami East Junior High where all the victims attended. This is of course, Megumi's old ground. Their only lead is the Yasohachi bridge but it takes a student telling them the same thing is happening to her to really get anywhere. She also says the night she went to the bridge, over a year ago, Tsumiki was with her. This is by far the biggest panic we've seen from Megumi. He asks Ijichi to have more guards put on, but it's a curse that has a time-frame on it and that's the real problem if they can't exorcise it soon it will trigger regardless because it comes from the inside. He tries to send Nobara and Yuuji home in order to protect them; but they show up with him again at the bridge, able to tell he was going to investigate on his own. They cross the river (of significance in shamanism, to spirits, etc), and enter the Spirit's territory. The spirit overwhelms Megumi until Megumi remembers something Gojou explained to him during his training after the Kyoto Goodwill Event and manifests an incomplete domain: Chimera Shadow Garden. He calls it pathetic but is able to work with it enough to remove Sukuna's finger from the spirit and exorcise it before passing out. His thoughts go back to his sister and when Gojou found them before he does so. After all this he shares that the event was triggered by the wakening of Sukuna and tells Nobara to not disclose this to Yuuji. Unbeknownst to Megumi, Yuuji says the same thing to Sukuna regarding Megumi. At the end of this whole debacle, Megumi is nominated for promotion to Grade 1 Sorcerer.SHIBUYA INCIDENT ARC
SO MUCH SHIT HAPPENS but basically they take down one of the cursed tools causing the screens with Takuma. Megumi and Yuuji fight Awasaka and Megumi figures out what his technique is and uses Escape Rabbit to explain it to Yuuji to regroup before taking him down. Then they manage to disengage one of the veils but not both. After taking Takuma for treatment using Nue who is evidently NOT dead yay, he ends up finding Dagon's Domain and breaking in to give Maki the Roaming Cloud Cursed Weapon. Then Megumi uses his own Domain to create a portal for escape but lol "Toji" comes through it instead. Although the portal is closed, he continues to keep his domain active and Nanami asks if he can keep it going and Megumi says for a little while/as long as he can. Meanwhile Toji exorcises Dagon.THE CULLING/ DEATH MIGRATION
After exorcising Dagon, Toji grabs Megumi and they're suddenly in a completely different place to fight. This is interesting because the memory of Toji's body is seeking out only the strongest, which is why he went and dispatched Dagon first. Arguably, one would think he might go for Nanami if anything, but he ends up going after Megumi instead. It can be argued he understands/senses that Megumi COULD be the strongest, given his technique despite being fairly depleted. It can also be argued there's a part of him that Chooses Megumi because he is his son even if he doesn't really remember because it's not really Toji just the manifestation of his body and its absolute dominance over the soul. During his fight with Toji, Megumi senses Sukuna and here Toji attacks. Megumi leads him into an alley intending to limit his attacks, is able to dodge Toji's blow with a shadow version of himself, and attacks only for Toji to evade but he then asks him: "Who are you?"and Megumi replies, "Fushiguro, Megumi." to which Toji says, "Not Zen'in huh? Good for you." Then stabs himself in the head. Megumi sees him revert to the original body and doesn't have time to dwell on it.
Attacked by another enemy, Megumi remembers Gojou telling him about the age old feud between the Gojou and Zen'in Clans, how the heads of each clan killed each other. They were like Gojou and Megumi: Six Eyes and the Limitless versus a user of the Ten Shadows. Thinking on that, Megumi explains that purifications can happen for him with multiple sorcerers but then the shikigami cannot be used, so it would be pointless. Except in this case, he is able to bring the enemy into the binding of the contract for purification, which means even though Megumi passes out (thrown into the wall of the building....again) after summoning it, it will go after that other person -- kill or be killed. Then Sukuna shows up, uses reverse curse technique to heal Megumi saying "Don't die", and then takes on Eight-Handled Sword Divergent Sila Divine General Mahoraga so that the contract will be null and void. After that, Sukuna brings Megumi to where Shouko is. SOME TIME LATER, he meets up with Itadori (and Yuuta) and informs him of the Brain's/Getwo's/Noritoshi Kamo's intent to force a culling game amongst jujutsu sorcerers including those marked i.e. Tsumiki. And no doubt aware that Itadori is thinking something along the lines of 'You'll only suffer because of me'/other reasons to keep running away/not return to the college, he says to him: "Start by saving me" (143). By this he means, helping with the problem of the culling game -- in regards to Tsumiki obviously. One wonders how it will matter to a sealed sorcerer like Gojou...and how can Noritoshi implement this on everyone??? Anyway, that's where we are. /narrator voice.
AS OF 144: well shit.
